The Steward Family

The Steward Home, North Stonington, Connecticut, about 1900

This family name is also found as Stewart.  As I found the names interchangeable in records, and since my direct ancestors are shown as Steward, for simplicity I will refer to all as Steward. 

Generation One

William Steward  married Sarah Church 5 May 1713 in Stonington, New London, Connecticut.  Sarah died 2 March 1745.  He then married Mary Bellows 16 March, 1747. 

William Steward and Sarah Church had the following children:

+ William Steward, Jr.  was born 26 December 1714.

Nathan Steward  was born 8 January 1717 in Stonington, CT.

Oliver Steward  was born 12 February 1719 in Stonington, CT.  He married Rebecca   Pendleton 20 August 1741.

+ Phineas Steward  was born 16 May 1721.

Lemuel Steward  was born 3 May 1723 in Stonington, CT.  He died February 28, 1727.

Sarah Steward was born 10 January 1725 in Stonington, New London, CT. She married Nathan Newbury 15 April 1743.

Content Steward was born 24 December 1727 in Stonington, New London, CT. She married Robert Parke.

+ Eliphalet Steward was born 10 November 1729 in Stonington, New London, CT.

+ Lemuel Steward was born 31 January 1732 in Stonington, New London, CT.

William Steward Jr. was born 26 December 1714 in Stonington, New London, CT.  He married Elizabeth Stevens 4 December 1740.  William died about 1760 in Stonington, CT.  They had the following children:

Lucretia Steward  was born 3 July 1741 in Stonington, CT.  She married Dr. John Bartlett.

Lucy Steward was born 30 July 1743 in Stonington, CT.  She married (Unknown) Stevens.

Elizabeth Steward was born 7 October 1747 in Stonington, CT.  She married John Coates.

Mary Steward  was born 28 November 1749 in Stonington, CT.  She married Oliver Wilcox.

Content Steward was born 6 June 1754 in Stonington, CT.  She married Timothy Coates.

Elisha Steward was born 29 June 1757.

Phineas Steward was born 16 May 1745.  He married twice.  He married Remember Babcock 11 January 1745.  He then married Hannah Barnaby.

Esther Steward.

Eliphalet Steward was born 10 November 1729 in Stonington, New London, CT.  He married Elizabeth (Unknown.). They had the following children:

Lemuel Steward  was born 6 April 1759.

Margaret Steward  was born 15 January 1761.

Eliphalet Steward  was born 1 January 1763,

Deborah Steward  was born 23 November 1764.

Martha Steward  was born 6 November 1766.

(Note: In the History of Stonington, these children are said to be those of Lemuel, below.  This appears to be wrong for many reasons, including the fact that Lemuel apparently died in 1758.)

Lemuel Steward was born 31 January 1732, and died before 7 September 1758.  He married Eunice (Unknown).  They had the following child:

Generation Three

 Russell Darrow Steward  was born 1 February 1805.  He died leaving no children.

Eliphalet Steward was born in Stonington, New London, Connecticut 14 August 1759. He married Mercy Coates. Mercy was born 5 September 1764 and died 13 April 1818. Eliphalet died 3 November 1837 in Busti, Chautauqua County, NY. Both were buried at Frank Settlement Cemetery in Busti, NY. Their remains were later moved to Lakeview Cemetery in Jamestown, NY. Edward Steward was born 8 December 1774.  He married Rebecca Noyes 15 February 1801.  She died 30 September 1842.  Edward died 29 April 1837.  They had the following children:

Rebecca Steward  was born 8 November 1801. She married Nathaniel M. Crary 13 July 1824.

Betsey R. Steward  was born 24 November 1803.  She married Frederick Swan 14 January 1828.  Betsey died 26 February 1849.

+ Denison Steward  was born 26 August 1807.

Emeline Steward  was born 6 January 1810.  She married William R. Wheeler 16 December 1830.  William died 15 February 1851.  Emeline died 31 October 1879.

Nancy Steward  was born 2 January 1813.  She died young.

Cyrus Steward  was born 20 December 1815. He died young.

Edward Steward  was born 3 January 1818.  He died young.

Dudley Steward  was born 17 December 1820.  He married Eliza Denison 6 May 1856.

George P. Steward was born 6 April 1786.  He married Polly (Mary) Hewitt 1 January 1812 in Preston, CT. Polly died 15 March 1870.  George died 1 May 1851.  They had the following children:

Cynthia Steward  was born 10 October 1812.  She married Lewis Maine, the son of Lewis Maine.

+ George W. Steward  was born 31 March 1816.

Phebe E. Steward  was born 31 May 1819.  She married Oliver S. Ecclestone.

Harriet H. Steward  was born 9 December 1821.  She died 25 April 1828.

Mary A. Steward  was born 9 November 1823.  She married Peter C. Gadbois.

Emily Steward  was born 25 June 1825.  She married twice-first Luther Yerrington, then John I. Plummer.

Elizabeth Steward  was born 25 April 1830.

Julia A. Steward  was born 19 December 1835.  She married Henry A. Tomlinson.

Lucy Steward was born  20 August 1782. She married Stephen Wilcox Jr. 1 January 1804. Stephen was born in Herkimer County, NY 2 October 1784.  Stephen died  17 April 1847 in Blockville, Chautauqua County, NY.  Lucy died 1 November 1859 in North East, PA.  Both are buried in Blockville, NY, Blockville Cemetery. Anna Steward married Walter Crouch.  Walter was born in 1786, and died in 1860.  They had the following child:

Michael Frank Crouch  was born in 1823.  He married Hattie Mandana Hogle.  She was the daughter of Andrew Littell Hogle and Hanna Read Reed.

John Steward Sr. was born in Frankfort, Herkimer Co., NY 14 June 1786. He married Eunice Wilcox in Bridgewater, NY,  26 December 1805. Eunice was born in Stonington, New London, CT 23 February 1787, the daughter of Stephen Wilcox Sr. and Sabra Palmer.  Eunice died 17 May 1875 in Busti, Chautauqua County, NY. John died 15 April 1826 in Busti, NY. Both are buried in Panama NY, Greenwood Cemetery. (Also See Wilcox Family.)

Elizabeth Steward was born 26 December 1792. She married Michael Frank in Frankfort, NY in 1809. Michael was born 18 December 1788, the son of Lawrence Frank and Mary Myers. Michael died 9 May 1869. Betsey died 26 March 1879. Both are buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown, NY.  They had the following children:

Lewis Frank was born 7 January 1815. He died 27 March 1851, and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown, NY.

Lucy Ann Frank was born 25 April 1817. She died 5 January 1819, and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery, Jamestown, NY.

Horace Frank was born 19 November 1819.

William L. Steward  was born in April, 1847.

Ella W. Steward  was born in February, 1852, and died 11 December 1861.

George W. Steward  was born 31 March 1816.  He married Phebe E. Palmer 28 March 1841.  She was the daughter of Cyrus Palmer.  Phebe died 15 March 1870.  George died 1 May 1861.  They had the following children:

Nathan W. Steward  was born 26 March 1843.

Sarah L. Steward  was born 29 May 1844.

Charles E. Steward  was born 25 April 1846. He died 25 November 1867.

Isabel Steward  was born 19 May 1855.  She died 11 February 1868.

George Steward Wilcox was born in Herkimer Co., NY 9 February 1810. He married Abigail Smith 14 December 1837. Abigail was born 1820 in New York State. Abigail died 22 February 1904 in Ripley, Chautauqua County, NY.  George died 4 April 1886 in Ripley, NY. Both are buried in Ripley, NY, East Ripley Cemetery.

George and Abigail had the following children:

Stephen A. Wilcox  was born 9 July 1841. He died 13 September 1842. He is buried in Blockville Union Cemetery, Blockville, Chautauqua Co., NY.

John C. Wilcox  was born 13 February 1843.  He died 30 January 1844.  He is buried in Blockville Union Cemetery, Blockville, Chautauqua Co., NY.

+ Amy Ida Wilcox  was born  20 November  1844.

Lucy Wilcox  was born about 1847 in New York.  Lucy never married.

Wallace William Wilcox was born in 1849. He married Mary J. (Unknown). Mary was born in 1845 and died in 1927.  Wallace died in 1922.  Both are buried in East Ripley Cemetery, Ripley, Chautauqua County, NY.

George Cornelius Wilcox was born about 1851 in New York. 

Eunice Eleanor Wilcox  was born about 1859 in New York.   She married (Unknown) Newlove.

Richard Marion Wilcox was born about 1861 in New York.

Arthur Smith Wilcox was born about 1864 in New York.

John S. Wilcox was born in 1812. He married Polly Carpenter in 1838.  Polly was born in 1819, and died in 1893.  John died in 1893.  They had the following child:

John Steward Jr. was born in Frankfort, Herkimer Co., NY  21 October 1806. He married Joanna Glidden 15 September 1831. Joanna was born in New Hampshire 13 September 1808.  Joanna died 13 January 1896. John died 2 May 1885. Both are buried in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY, Greenwood Cemetery.  They had the following children:

Sardius Steward was born in Frankfort, Herkimer Co., NY 29 October 1808. He married Rhoda Ward 15 March 1832 in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY.   Rhoda was born 21 May 1814 in Wells, Rutland Co., VT, the daughter of Zael Ward and Susan Page.  She died 27 March 1909 in Ashville, Chautauqua Co., NY.  Sardius died  5 December 1894. Both are buried in Blockville Union Cemetery, Blockville, Chautauqua Co., NY.  They had the following children:

Lucy Steward was born in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY 28 December 1810. She married Levi Lewis in Busti, Chautauqua Co.,  NY, 8 January 1829. Levi was born in Wells, Rutland Co., VT  1 June 1803. Levi was the son of John Lewis and Rhoda Hall. Levi died 16 August 1877 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY. Lucy died 26 September 1895 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY. Both are buried in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, Union Cemetery. They had the following children:

Lucy Wilcox Lewis was born 19 February 1830 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY. She died  22 April 1851 in Panama, NY.

Celina Joanna Lewis was born 16 February 1833 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY.  She married Henry H. Graves 1854. Henry was born August, 1833. Celina died in 1917.

+ Beverley Waugh Lewis was born  17 January 1841.

+ Bertrand Levy Lewis was born  14 October 1849.  

Stephen W. Steward was born in Busti, NY 30 December 1812. He married twice.  He married Olive Dexter  4 October 1835. He married Caroline Stevens. Stephen was killed 18 December 1867 in a railroad accident in Angola, NY.

Eliphalet Steward was born in Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY 22 February 1815. He married Clarissa F. Polley in Harmony, Chautauqua Co.,  NY, 12 November 1835. Clarissa was born in Augusta, NY  5 October 1818, the daughter of Ann Polley, and died 4 April 1888 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY.  Eliphalet died 3 December 1885 in Panama, NY. Both are buried in Harmony, NY, Greenwood Cemetery. They had the following children:

John S. Steward was born  24 February 1837 in Harmony, Chautauqua Co.,  NY. He married Celestia LaBounty 10 September 1857. Celestia was born in Magog, Canada East 8 May 1838. She died 3 December 1865 in Panama, Chautauqua Co.,  NY. John died 23 February 1869 in Panama, NY. Both are buried in Harmony, NY, Greenwood Cemetery. 

+ Mary Ett Steward was born  28 July 1841.

+ Helen Johanna Steward was born 25 September 1845.

+ Anna Melissa Steward was born  8 June 1848.

Eunice Minerva Steward was born in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY  30 November 1849. She married Myron H. Widrig in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY,  9 July 1873. Myron was born in Ashford, Cattaraugus Co., NY  7 June 1845, and died in 1911.  Eunice died in 1920 in Panama, NY.  Both are buried in Harmony, NY, Greenwood Cemetery.

Millard Monroe Steward was born in Panama, Chautauqua Co.,  NY 8 October 1852. He married Rillia Matson in Jamestown, NY, 5 November 1872.  Millard died 28 January 1876 in Panama, NY. He is buried in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY, Greenwood Cemetery.

+ Arba Eliphalet Steward was born 18 October 1854.

Frank William Steward was born in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY 5 July 1856. He married Harriett A. Wiltsie in Corry, PA, 24 December 1882.  Hattie was born in Clymer, Chautauqua Co.,  NY  28 August 1855. Hattie died in 1921. Frank died 18 December 1899 in Panama, NY. Both are buried in Panama, NY, Union Cemetery. 

Fred G. Steward was born 5 August 1865. Freddie died 24 September 1866 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, and is buried in Harmony, NY, Greenwood Cemetery.

Almira Steward was born 19 February 1817 in Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY. She married Daniel Chase Glidden 31 January 1839.    Daniel was born 8 August 1806 in New Hampshire, and died 5 February 1875 in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co.,  NY. Almira died 24 May 1886 in Jamestown, NY. They had the following children:

+ Helen Joanna Glidden was born 12 November 1839.

+ Eunice Cornelia Glidden was born 6 March 1840.

+ Leona C. Glidden was born 28 May 1843.

Angelina E. Glidden was born 23 November 1847.  She died 18 January 1878 in Jamestown, NY.

Amos W. Glidden was born about 1849.

+ Gilbert Dayton Glidden was born 14 January 1850.

Cornelia Steward was born 11 January 1820. She married Gustavus A. Bentley in 1841. Gustavus was born 12 August 1817 in New York State, the son of Uriah Bentley and Nancy Sweet. Gustavus died 26 December 1890. Cornelia died 20 February 1888. Both are buried in  Lakewood, Chautauqua Co., NY, Bentley Cemetery. They had the following children:

Marian Bentley was born about 1843 in New York.

+ Frances Bentley was born 1845.

Frederick A. Bentley was born about 1847 in New York.

Rhoda L. Steward was born in Panama, NY 16 March 1822. She married Horace Henry Gifford in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY, in March, 1843. Horace was born in Granville, NY 19 October 1821, the son of William Gifford and Phoebe Cornell. Horace died 30 August 1905 in Cattaraugus Co., New York. Rhoda died 9 April 1894 in Jamestown, NY.  Both are buried in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY, Lakeview Cemetery.  Rhoda and Horace had the following children:

+ Frank Edward Gifford was born 6 November 1845.

+ Charles Henry Gifford was born 19 January 1850.

+ William Steward Gifford was born 25 January 1856.

Alfred W. Steward was born in 1824 in New York State. He married three times. He married Minerva Bentley. Minerva was born 20 April 1823, the daughter of Uriah Bentley and Nancy Sweet. She died 25 November 1849 . She is buried  in Lakewood, Chautauqua Co., NY, Bentley Cemetery. He married Julia Hawkins. Julia was born in 1831, and died in 1910.  She is buried in Clymer, Chautauqua Co., NY, East Clymer Cemetery.  He married Cordelia Robinson. She was born in 1833 in New York, and died in 1910.  She is buried in Clymer, NY, East Clymer Cemetery.  Alfred died in 1894, and is buried in Clymer, NY, East Clymer Cemetery.

Alfred Steward and Minerva Bentley had the following child:

Millard F. Steward was born October, 1848. Millard died 29 April 1849. He is              buried in Lakewood, NY, Bentley Cemetery.

Alfred had four other children.  Their mother could be either Julia Hawkins or Cordelia Robinson, depending on when he was married to each:

Eunice R. Steward was born about 1859 in New York State.

Elizabeth Steward was born in July, 1826 in Chautauqua Co., NY.  She married Henry O. Lakin in 1850.   Henry was born 30 September 1826 in Portland, Chautauqua Co., NY..  They had the following child:

Luther Steward Lakin was born in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY 10 May 1852. He married Ellen Eliza Andrews 26 January 1876 in Jamestown, NY. Ella was born in Sugar Grove, Warren Co., PA 10 May 1863, the daughter of Dr. Jeremiah Andrews and Sarah Clark Jackson.

Steward Frank was born 18 July 1810. He married three times. He married Polly A. Edmunds. Polly was born 17 September 1818 in New York, and died 17 April 1852.  She is buried in Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY, Wilcox Cemetery.  He married Wealthy Babcock. Wealthy was born 3 April 1812 in New York, and died 3 July 1873. She is buried in Ashville, Chautauqua Co., NY, Maple Grove Cemetery.  He married Catherine Wing. Catherine was born about 1826 in New York State.

Michael S. Frank was born 10 November 1837.  He died 10 June 1841.

Lucy A. Frank was born about 1839 in New York.

+ Elizabeth M. Frank was born about 1841.

+ Mary Frank was born about 1845.

Joanna Frank was born about 1848 in New York. She married Henry Stearns.

Martha J. Frank was born about 1851 in New York.

Steward Frank had the following children whose mother was probably Wealthy Babcock:

Eunice Frank was born 13 August 1822.  She married twice. She married Sylvester Babcock in 1844. Sylvester was born 9 August 1821, and died in 1847. He is buried in Ashville, Chautauqua Co., NY, Maple Grove Cemetery.  She married Miles Lewis. Miles was born about 1824, and died 10 February 1896. He is buried in Blockville, Chautauqua Co., NY, Blockville Union Cemetery.  Eunice was his third wife.  Eunice died 7 December 1877.  There are headstones for her in both Maple Grove and Blockville Union cemeteries. In which cemetery are her remains? 

+ Alice J. Babcock was born about 1845.

+ Emily Babcock was born about 1847.

+ Almina Lewis was born in 1857.

Jennie Lewis was born about 1859 in New York. She married Charles Phillips.

 John Nelson Frank was born 12 January 1828. He married twice.  He married Aurilla Ann Palmeter.  Aurilla was the daughter of Josiah Palmeter and Johanna (Unknown). Aurilla died May 10, 1861. He married Cynthia Root Homer.

John Nelson Frank and Aurilla Ann Palmeter had the following children:

Alta Frank was born about 1855 in New York.

Ida Frank was born about 1858 in New York. She married Smith Homer.  Smith was born about 1852 in New York, the son of Harry Homer and Cynthia Root.  Harry was also Ida's stepbrother-the son of her stepmother from her first marriage.

Jennie Frank was born in 1860 in New York.

(There is some evidence that John had two other daughters; however, I do not know their names.)

Emeline Frank was born 19 June 1831. She married James Delamater Stearns.  They had the following children:

Jason M. Frank married Maria Palmer. They had the following children:

Jonathan M. Frank was born 27 May 1850.  He died 22 December 1854, and is buried in Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY, Wilcox Cemetery.

Amy Ida Wilcox was born  20 November 1844 in Blockville, Chautauqua Co., NY. She married William H. Barnes 30 December 1869. Amy died 15 February 1915 in Ripley, Chautauqua Co., NY. They had the following child:

+ Jay Wilcox Barnes was born 31 January 1881.

Stephen Wilcox  was born in 1846.  He married Eila May Butt in 1871. Eila was born in 1852.  They had the following child:

Edna Butt Wilcox  was born in St. Petersburg, PA.  She married James Whitehill.

Francis C. Steward was born  5 July 1832. (He was twin to Franklin.) He married Melissa Smith. Melissa was born about 1833 in New York State, and died before 1870. Francis died 27 May 1896.  He is buried in Harmony, NY, Greenwood Cemetery. They had the following children:

(Note:  Though I have found evidence of both these children, they could be the same person, if a census was recorded incorrectly.)

Franklin G. Steward  was born  5 July 1832. (He and Frances were twins.) He married Eunice V. Knowles. Eunice was born 4 March 1837 in Pennsylvania, and died 21 July 1872. Franklin died 5 July 1908.  Both are buried in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY, Greenwood Cemetery.  They had the following children:

Cara B. Steward  was born about 1861 in New York. 

Frances O. Steward  was born about 1862 in New York. (Frances may be Orie.)

I also believe there may have been two other children, Tune and Mary.   Two small gravestones with these names are next to Eunice and Franklin.

Mary E. Steward was born about 1846 in New York, twin sister to Martha.  She married Oliver Dalrymple. They lived in St. Paul, MN, and had the following children:

Martha A. Steward was born about 1846 in New York, twin sister to Mary. She married Henry A. Button in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, 6 March 1878. Henry was born 11 January 1847 in New York, the son of Alvin Button and Lodema (Unknown.)  Martha died 2 October 1901 in Casselton, ND. Henry remarried to Ora Steward Dewey after 1901. Martha and Henry had the following children:

Joanna Lodema Button was born 2 May 1880. She married William Stuart Moore 21 January 1904.

Martha Oraella Button was born 29 August 1887. She married Lafayette Eugene Corell 16 November 1911.

Almira Steward was born about 1835 in New York. She married James H. Polley. James was born about 1835 in New York. They had the following child:

William W. Steward was born in 1837 in New York.  He married Helen Barker. Helen died before 1880.William died in 1906, and is buried in Blockville, Chautauqua Co., NY, Blockville Union Cemetery.  They had the following children:

Sylvia S. Steward was born in 1840 in New York. She married twice. She married Henry B. Loomis. She married (Unknown) Maxwell. Syvia and (Unknown) Maxwell were divorced before 1910. Sylvia died in 1929. She is buried in Ashville, Chautauqua Co., NY, Maple Grove Cemetery.

Levantia Steward was born about 1845 in New York.  She married James A. Abbott, who was from Sugar Grove, Warren Co., PA.  They had the following child:

Andrew Steward was born in 1849 in New York. He married Emma Wemple about 1873.. Emma was born 1851 in New York, and died in 1910. Andrew died in 1943. Both are buried in Ashville, Chautauqua Co., NY, Maple Grove Cemetery.  They had the following children:

+ Velma Steward was born about 1875.

Josephine Steward was born 2 June 1881. She married Clyde Hawkins. Josephine died 20 July 1970, and is buried in Ashville, NY, Maple Grove Cemetery.

Alfred Steward Lewis was born in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY 24 May 1835. He married Miranda H. Ransom about 1860. Miranda was born in 1839, and died in 1921. Alfred died  20 June 1905 in Panama, NY. Both are buried in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, Union Cemetery. They had the following children:

Marian L. Lewis was born 14 June 1860 in New York State. She died 17 October 1899 in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY, and is buried in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, Union Cemetery.

Beverley Waugh Lewis was born 17 January 1841 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., New York.  He married Louisa A. Graves.  She was born 11 September 1840 in New York State, and died in 1925.  Beverley died 17 November 1918 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, and is buried in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, Union Cemetery.  They had five children, of whom I can identify the following two:

Mary L. Lewis was born about 1867 in New York.  She married (Unknown) Young.

Frank S. Lewis was born in 1870 in New York.

Sardius S. Lewis was born about 1877 in New York.

George Lewis was born about 1884.  He married Nellie M. (Unknown.)

Bertrand Levi Lewis was born 14 October 1849 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., New York.  He married three times.  He first married Emily Amelia Pease 24 December 1868. Emily was born in 1849 in New York, and died 17 February 1902.  He married Jessie B. (Unknown) in 1903. Jessie was born about 1854 in New York.  He married Hattie Durham Henderson in Dunkirk, Chautauqua Co., New York 7 April 1925.  She was born about 1862.  Bertrand died 30 November 1930.  He and his first wife, Emily, are buried in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, Union Cemetery.

Dorlisca M. Steward married F. E. Mulkie 17 September 1868.  F. E. was born 24 January 1846 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus Co.,  NY. They had the following child:

Mary Ett Steward  was born  28 July 1841 in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY. She married Henry W. Leslie in Panama, NY, 16 May 1860.  Henry was born in Pennsylvania 18 March 1838, and died 16 March 1874 in Portland, Chautauqua Co.,  NY. Mary died 19 April 1904 in Chautauqua, NY, at 62 years of age. They had the following children:

+ Joseph Eliphalet Leslie was born 10 May 1861.

Harrie John Leslie was born in Meadville, PA  30 May 1863. He married Camilla Baker in Corry, PA.

Carrie Julia Leslie was born in Corry, PA in November, 1866. She married George W. Rowland in Chautauqua, NY.

Jessie May Leslie was born in Sinclairville, Chautauqua Co., NY 7 June 1872.

Helen Johanna Steward was born in Harmony, NY 25 September 1845. She married Charles Edgar Rexford in Panama, NY, 26 November 1865. Charles was born in Harmony, NY 30 August 1844, the son of Levi Rexford and Lurancy Doud. Charles died in 1918. Helen died 1912. Both are buried in the Town of Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY, Greenwood Cemetery.

Helen Johanna Steward and Charles Edgar Rexford had the following children:

Anna Melissa Steward  was born in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY 8 June 1848. She married George A. Johnson in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, 3 January 1867. George was born in Buffalo, NY 19 October 1845. They had the following children:

Maude L. Johnson was born in Corry, PA 10 April 1870. She married William J. Stephenson in Evans City, PA, 5 February 1889.

+ William G. Johnson was born 28 September 1874.

Arba Eliphalet Steward was born in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY 18 October 1854. He married Iva Ona Lewis in Corry, PA, 31 December 1874, the daughter of Norman Lewis and Sarah (Unknown). She born in Harmony, NY 16 November 1856, and died 3 August 1884 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, at 27 years of age. Arba died 9 January 1879 in Panama, NY, at 24 years of age. He is buried in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY, Greenwood Cemetery.  They had the following children:

 Luther L. Steward was born in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY about 11 December 1875. Lutie died 21 January 1877 in Harmony, NY, at 1 year of age. He is buried in Harmony, NY, Greenwood Cemetery.

+ Bessie May Steward was born 10 September 1878.

Helen Joanna Glidden was born 12 November 1839.  She married John Wilkes Windsor 2 February 1860.  Helen died 18 January 1918 in Jamestown, NY.  Helen and John had the following children:

Frank Chase Windsor was born in 1861.

Florence Windsor was born in 1864.

John Dayton Windsor was born in 1866.

Eunice Cornelia Glidden was born in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY 6 March, 1840.  She married James Harvey Ransom 18 December 1862 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY.  James was born in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY 15 November 1836, the son of Dr. Willard Ransom and Maryette Briggs.  James and Eunice moved to Ottawa, Kansas. James died in Ransomville, KS 18 October 1914.  Eunice died 19 April 1892 in Panama, NY. Eunice  and James had the following child:

+ Myra Mariette Ransom was born 12 November 1863.

+ Willard Glidden Ransom was born 17 February 1875.

Leona C. Glidden was born 28 May 1843 in New York. She married Dr. Francis Denman Ormes 8 September 1864 in Jamestown, NY.  Francis was born about 1838 in New York, the son of Dr. Cornelius Ormes and Angeline Moore. Leona died 30 April, 1898.  They had the following children:

+ Jessie Ormes was born in 1866.

C. Frank Ormes  was born in 1874 in New York.  He married Pauline Backus.

Grace Ormes was born in 1878 in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY.  She married Joseph Graff.

Leona Ormes was born 6 January 1882.  She married Herbert J. Goodwill in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY in 1902.

Gilbert Dayton Glidden was born 14 January 1850 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY.  He married twice.  He married Clara E. Wheaton 27 January 1876.  Clara was born in Michigan about 1851, and died 19 July 1892.  He married Mae Bruner 14 February 1896.  Mae was born in May, 1863 in Illinois, and died in 1949.  Gilbert died in 1927.

Gilbert Dayton Glidden and Clara E. Wheaton had the following children:

Daniel C. Glidden  was born 19 January 1878 in New York, and died 23 October 1958 in Ottawa, KS.

Robert D. Glidden was born 28 December 1879 in New York. He died 7 July 1950.

Gilbert Dayton Glidden and Mae Bruner had the following child:

Astrid Glidden  was born 27 July 1900.  She married Andrew Clarence Runge.  Andrew was born in 1898, and died in 1960.  Astrid died in December, 1982 in Mexico, Audrain Co., MO.

Frances Bentley was born in 1845 in New York. She married John Sherwood Briggs. John was born in 1836, and died in 1907. Frances and John had the following child:

 Cornelia Briggs. She married William M. Schaill. 

Frank Edward Gifford was born 6 November 1845 in Pennsylvania. He married Josephine Fenton 20 June 1881. Josephine was born 15 April 1845, the daughter of Reuben Fenton and Elizabeth Scudder. Josephine died 5 November 1928.  Frank died 1 July 1934. Both are buried in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY, Lakeview Cemetery. They had the following children:

Josephine Francesca Gifford was born in 1883. She died 8 May 1884. She is buried in Jamestown, NY, Lakeview Cemetery.

Cecile Gifford was born in Jamestown, NY 12 April 1885. She married John       Wendell Minturn. John was born 1879. John died in 1959. Cecile died 18 April 1965.   Both are buried in Jamestown, NY, Lakeview Cemetery.

Charles Henry Gifford was born in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY 19 January 1850. He married Grace Mason Curtis in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY, 19 June 1872. Grace was born in 1854, the daughter of Phillip Curtis and Cathro Mason. Grace died 21 September 1936. Charles died 28 April 1914. Both are buried in Jamestown, NY, Lakeview Cemetery. They had the following child:

Kathro Grace Gifford was born 18 July 1873. She died 4 April 1876 in Rochester,  Monroe Co., NY, and is buried in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY, Lakeview Cemetery.

William Steward Gifford was born 25 January 1856 in New York. He married Lucy May Love in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co.,  NY, 1 October 1885. May was born in Randolph, Cattaraugus Co., NY in 1861, the daughter of Samuel Gurley Love and Louise Metcalf. May died 16 June 1941. William died in 1922. Both are buried in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY, Lakeview Cemetery. They had the following children:

+ Katherine Love Gifford was born 26 December 1886.

 Louise Metcalf Gifford was born in Jamestown, NY 24 January 1891. She married (unknown) Purvis. Louise died in 1916.  She was buried in Jamestown, NY, Lakeview Cemetery.

Elizabeth M. Frank was born about 1841 in New York.  She married Charles Ellis, who was born about 1838 in New York. They had the following child:

Mary Ellis was born about 1863 in New York.

Mary Frank was born about 1845 in New York.  She married Galusha M. Davis.  Galusha was born about 1834.  Mary was Galusha's second wife.  He was previously married to Lucy Ann (Unknown), who died in November, 1864, with whom he had daughters, Ella and Joanna.  Mary and Galusha had the following child:

Alice J. Babcock was born in 1845. She married Jacob Bottome Foster in 1866. Jacob was born 8 September 1835/1836, in Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY and died 3 December 1926 in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY.  Alice died in 1895. They had the following children:

+ Rhoda Foster was born about 1867.

Belle Foster was born about 1873. (She may also have been known as "Nellie.") She married John F. Westrum.

Emily Babcock was born about 1847 in New York.  She married Washington Sweet. They had the following children:

Almina N. Lewis was born in 1857 in New York. She married Harry Bouton, who was born in 1852. Harry died in 1935. Almina died in 1925.  Both are buried in Ashville, Chautauqua Co., NY, Maple Grove Cemetery.  They had the following children:

S. Miles Bouton.  He married Frieda D. Kleinsang in 1903.

Jay Wilcox Barnes was born in Ripley, Chautauqua Co., NY 31 January 1881. He married Lucy Bartlett in Buffalo, NY, 20 February 1907. They had the following children:

Grace Elsa Barnes was born 3 January 1913 in Grand Junction, CO.

Muriel Janet Barnes was born 20 July 1914 in Evanston, WY .

Mary Steward Button was born 3 April 1883 in North Dakota. She married Earl L. Button 22 June 1905. Earl was born 22 June 1881 in New York, the son of Leon Earle Button and Hattie L. Steres. Earl died 1 August 1920.  Mary died in 1968. Both are buried in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, Union Cemetery. They had the following children:

Henry Alvin Button was born 15 January 1906 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY.  He married Lillian C. Williams 30 June 1933.  Lillian was born 7 March 1900 in Coryville, PA, and died 22 January 1993. Henry died 9 February 2000 in Viroqua, WI.  Both are buried in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY, Lake View Cemetery.

Martha Button was born August/September 1909. She married (Unknown) Covey.

Edwin S. Loomis was born in 1864 in New York.  He married Josephine Glidden about 1904. Josephine was born in 1875 in New York, the daughter of Duane Glidden and Betsey House. Josephine died in 1955.  Edwin died in 1927. Both are buried in Ashville, Chautauqua Co., NY, Maple Grove Cemetery.  They had the following children:

Sylvia G. Loomis was born about 1907 in New York.

Franklin V. Loomis was born about 1909 in New York.

Velma Steward was born about 1875 in New York.  She married (Unknown) Fowler about 1898.  They had the following child:

Bertrand Lewis was born about 1871 in New York.  He married May Rexford about 1892.  May was born in September, 1869, the daughter of Myron Rexford & Jane A. Rice. They had the following children:

Roy A. Lewis was born about 1907 in New York.

Carrie Ett Rexford was born in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY 2 October 1866. She married twice. She married Richard T. Merchant in Panama, NY, 8 February 1885. Richard was born in Cattaraugus Co., New York 25 April, 1851. Richard was the son of Chauncey Merchant and Helen Delaney. Richard died 28 November 1900 in Lakewood, Chautauqua Co., NY. Carrie married William Dunn about 1917. Carrie died in 1928.  Carrie and Richard Merchant are buried in Busti, Chautauqua Co., NY, Busti Cemetery.

Charles Chauncey Merchant was born 23 July 1887.

Helen M. Merchant was born in Lakewood, NY 19 May 1889. She married John Holzer.  John was born probably  2 February 1893, and died 21 December 1975. Helen died 27 August 1951 in San Diego, CA.

Mary Florence Merchant was born 30 June 1893.

Carolyn E. Merchant was born 17 March 1897.

Rue DeWitt Merchant was born 25 October 1898.

Harriet Steward Merchant was born 25 July 1901.

Merta L. Rexford was born in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., NY 16 January 1872. She married Dewitt William Alsdorf in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY, 25 October 1888. Dewitt was born in Sparta, Crawford Co., PA in 1862, the son of Abram Alsdorf and Hannah Baker. Dewitt died in 1949 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY. Merta died in November, 1947 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY.   They are both buried in Little Valley Rural Cemetery. They had the following child:

Harrie R. Alsdorf was born in Spartansburg, PA  12 January 1890. He married Ella G. (Unknown).  Harrie died in 1939 in Little Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY, and is buried in Little Valley Rural Cemetery.                         

Fred N. Johnson was born 3 February 1868 in Corry, PA. He married Nannie M. Hile in Butler, PA, 2 May 1888. Nannie died 10 July 1888.  They had the following child:

Hattie M. Johnson was born in Parkers Landing, PA 14 March 1890.

William G. Johnson was born  28 September 1874 in St. Petersburg, PA. He married Tinnie Hovis in Franklin, PA, 2 January 1894. They had the following child:

Harry N. Johnson was born 2 March 1896 in Evans City, PA .

Bessie May Steward was born 10 September 1878 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY. She married twice. She married (Unknown) Powers.  She married Charles Hurd in Portland, Chautauqua Co., NY, 23 August 1905.

Bessie May and Charles had the following child:

Myra Mariette Ransom was born 12 November 1863 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., NY. She married Byron Douglas Bennett 13 November 1884 in Ransomville, KS.  Byron was born 11 April 1861 in Maroa, IL, and died 25 July 1958 in Ottawa, KS.  Myra died 22 March, 1944 in Ottawa, KS.  They had the following children:

James Henry Bennett  was born 28 August 1885.  He married Delia Elizabeth Broderick 1 August 1912.  Delia was born 12 September 1886 in Kansas, and died 30 October 1959 in Ottawa, KS.  James died 27 June 1930 in San Francisco, CA. 

Eunice Bennett was born 15 January 1889.  She married Harry Virgil George.  Harry was born 15 June 1888.  He died in January, 1961.  Eunice died 20 April 1942 in Denver, CO.

Frank Ransom Bennett Sr. was born 5 November 1891 in Pittsburg, KS.  He married Jennie Alexina Davis 7 July 1922 in Denver, CO.  Jennie was born 4 May, 1904, and died 13 December 1982 in Ottawa, KS.  Frank died 8 January 1972 in Ottawa, KS.

Catherine Bennett was born 10 September 1899.  She married Bert Anderson 23 June 1923 in Lawrence, KS.  Bert was born 2 June 1892 in Peoria, KS, and died 30 December 1948 in Kansas City, MO.

Willard Glidden Ransom  was born 17 February 1875 in Clinton, Douglas Co., KS.  He married Edna Lischer 13 June 1911 in Davenport, IA.  Edna was born 14 June 1875 in Davenport, IA.  She died 22 October 1964 in Ottawa, KS. Willard died 10 March 1950 in Ransomville, KS.  They had the following children:

James Frederick Ransom  was born 19 May 1912.  He married Annette Mouett in 1937. James died in 1983.

Willard Glidden Ransom, Jr. was born 10 January 1914. He married Anne Washington.  Willard died 21 April 1991.

Charles Gilbert Ransom was born in July, 1915, and died 7 November 1917.

John Parke Ransom  was born 16 May 1919.  He married three times.  He married Hannah Jo Blake 1 December 1943.  She was born 14 March, 1917, and died in 1973.  He married Bonnie Lue Clapp 4 April 1974.  Bonnie was born in 1919, and died in 1992.  He married Joan Pattie in 1993.

Marian Ransom was born 26 November 1922 in Schenectady, Schenectady Co., NY.  She married Donald Bruce Ward.

Jessie Ormes was born in 1866 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., New York.  She married Arthur Greenlund.  Arthur died before 1920.  They had the following child:

Katherine Love Gifford  was born in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co.,  NY 26 December 1886. She married twice. She married Earle Fenton Gilbert. Earle was born 1885, and died in 1931. She married (unknown) Carr. Katherine died in 1963.  She is buried in Jamestown, Chautauqua Co., NY, Lake View Cemetery.
